FL Speak - The best book of the series. EVER!!! This is one book you just cannot put down! All the characters that you loved and missed in the last book is back! Arya, Jon Snow, Tyrion, Stannis and Daenerys. They are back and they raise hell!

Lets start with Stannis. He is at the wall where he defeats the wildlings. Stannis supposedly kills Mance Ryder for being a deserter and his crimes against the realm. Tyrion is on the way to the islands under the protection of the Spider. As always Tyrion is always the best character though I am starting to love Jon Snow more. The surprise of the decade came when Aegon is introduced. Yes, the heir of the Targaryen is alive and he seeks out his aunt, Daenerys. So does Tyrion as he launches into his anti-Lannister mode.

The kingdom of Dorne is in the search of Dany as well. The young prince Quentyn sails to Mereen in hopes of marrying Dany and stand against King's Landing. What starts as hope, ends his disaster when he is burnt alive by one of Dany's dragons. Jon Snow tries to keep the men of the Watch together as he lets the free folk into the realm and recruits them into the Watch to face a common foe. Dany on the other hand is busy maintaining the fragile peace. And oh she marries a loser. I don't wanna remember his name.

The bastard of Bolton is set to marry the fake Arya the Lannisters has provided. And Stannis marches to Winterfell to crash that wedding and defeat them. Little does he know about the dreaded winter of the North. The Iron Throne has proclaimed a king of their own and he orders his brother Victarian Greyjoy to seek out Daenerys as well. Looks like half the characters want to marry her while the other half are blissfully ignorant even of her existence. Theon finally manages to free the tortures of Ramsay Bolton only to be captured by the Men of the Watch and presented to Stannis jst beyond the gates of Winterfell. The Starks are as usual, lost to everyone. The book ends with Jon Snow being stabbed by his trusted brothers and losing consciousness. I swear i will hunt down and kill George R.R Martin and stab him myself if he kills him!!!

Overall, a brilliant piece of writing. I don't want it to get over. 2 more books left and i pray and pray that the Starks survive.

EXCERPT - Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell's grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan's stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of her room. Needle was Jon Snow's smile. He used to mess my hair and call me "little sister", she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes.

FL Speaks - [this review contains spoilers. I strongly suggest you read the previous books or atleast, their reviews]

A literal pain in the ass for more than half the book. This book focusses on King's Landing and all the politics that comes with it. Too many Cersei and Jaime chapters...infact, more than too many. Brienne seems to be there too as well. Anyway, this book brings back more characters than before. The Greyjoy's has started another rebellion. Once a new king has been chosen, they sail towards King's Landing. Up away in the north, Lord Commander Snow sends Sam and Maester Aemon to Braavos.

The best character of all the previous books, Tyrion, is missing from this one. Also missing is Daeneyrs, the last of the Targaryens. As is said before, politics come to the fore in this book. With the death of Lord Tywin, Cersei is without a Hand of King. As she tries to protect the King in her own scheming ways, his wife plots to make Tommen free off his mother. Neither succeeds for a long time and it feels like you are watching a stupid indian tv soap.

Sansa is at her dead aunt's place. Less pages of her and thankfully, less whining. Arya Stark is, as usual, yet again, on the run. She finally manages to get a ship to Braavos after escaping the clutches of the Hound. Sam Tarwell meets her there and i prayed that they would finally talk and he would take her to the wall to meet her half brother. But no, apparently my dreams do not match with Mr. Martin. The book picks up the pace after halfway. Plots reveal one after another. I feel sad for Brienne as she is killed for something she believed in. Off all the murders in the series, Ned Stark's, Robb's and hers, i condemn the most. Cersei's life may very well be over after she is held captive for sleeping around. Lol. That was the best scene. Serves that slut right! She sends a letter to Jaime asking him to rescue her but he burns it. I have never smiled as much as this before.

Riverrun has fallen. The Starks are gone. But without Bran, Jon Snow, Tyrion, Daenerys and Stannis, this book almost became a challenge for me whether to complete it or not. Mr. Martin, what were you thinking? YOU NEVER LEAVE OUT YOUR BEST CHARACTERS. Also where is Rickon? Lots of unanswered questions and it threatens to burst into the final volume of the series. Will the Starks find each other? Will the dragons bring peace or war? Will the Lannisters survive their incoming doom? What will happen to the Wall when the Others come? So many left unanswered....one final volume to set it all free. CAN'T WAIT!

FL Speaks - [This review contains spoilers. I am not going to recap the previous books. So if you haven't read them or the reviews, stop here. I will try not to reveal everything about the book, but most will be out considering this book has the maximum shock and surprises of your lives]

By then End of Book 1, 3 men named themselves the King of the Seven Kingdoms. Renly Baratheon, Joffrey and Robb Stark. By the end of this book,they are murdered, murdered and murdered. Yep, that's the equation right now. Chaos! One stands tall, but with hardly an army, Stannis Baratheon and one Queen is on her way to take the kingdoms by storm, Daeneryes. And not to forget, Mance Ryder rides with his wildlings to attack the Wall in the north.

The book starts sensationally. Whatever disappointments I had with the previous book, this one more than makes up to it. First things first, Jon Snow escapes from Mance Rider's company to keep his vows to the Night's Watch and prepare for the onslaught. The 200 odd rangers that were to fight the wildlings are mostly dead. A mutiny and then the Others strikes. Far away, Lady Catelyn Stark and her son King Robb Stark visit Walder Frey to offer his apologies for not marrying one of his daughters as he vowed. Now, Walder Frey wants Catelyn's brother and the ruler of Riverrun to marry one of his chosen. Robb needs the alliance and what begins with fun and merriment ends in cold blooded slaughter of Robb Stark and his mother Catelyn by the Freys.

By this time, i hope you have realized not to care about a character. Coz whoever you like, George R.R. Martin is sure to kill them off one by one. The Starks are almost gone. Ned Stark, dead. Robb Stark, dead. Catelyn Stark, dead. Arya Stark, missing. Bran and Rickon Stark, on the run. Sansa Stark, captive.

Yet again, Jon Snow and Tyrion stands apart in this book, followed by Arya. Arya is rescued by Lord Berric who refuses to die even after being mortally injured more than once. Though the Hound kidnaps Arya from them again, he wishes to see her off to her brother and mother for a nice ransom. And just before he reaches them, Robb and Catelyn are murdered. In King's Landing, a feast has been organised on the occassion of Joffrey's marriage and it is there that Joffrey dies. Apparently he was poisoned, which is awesome news to me personally since i wanted that rotten idiot to be dead from the beginning. Cersei immediately puts the blame on Tyrion and he is imprisoned while his wife, Sansa Stark is whisked away by Littlefinger in a ship to safety (I always knew Littlefinger was devious, but his greatest treachery come in the final pages of the book. Jaime Lannister finally reaches King's Landing, but the Kingslayer is a ghost of his former past after losing his hand.

The Lannisters are finally beginning to be noble. Though its a long shot, Tryion and Jaime finally manage not to make me curse. Jaime frees Tyrion from his cell and tells him to run. One good thing Tyrion does before fleeing is killing his father, Lord Tywin. Daeneyres is conquering city after city, but her role is getting uninteresting by the book. Up in the North, Jon manages to stop the wildlings for a few days from the wall and are finally saved by the timely arrival of Stannis Baratheon's army. Surprises in the end will make you gasp as Jon is now the Lord Commander of the Wall. Littlefinger takes Sansa to her aunt, Lady Lysa and there he commits the ultimate betrayal.

Oh this series is only getting more exciting. Up next is 'A FEAST FOR CROWS' and i can't wait to see the aftershocks of the series of events that are to follow.

They rode North, away from the lake, following a rutted farm road across the torn fields and into the woods and streams. Arya took the lead, kicking her stolen horse to a brisk heedless trot until the woods closed in on her. Hot Pie and Gendry followed as best as they could. Wolves howled off in the distance, and she could hear Hot Pie's heavy breathing. No one spoke. From time to time Arya glanced over her shoulder, to make sure the two boys had not fallen too far behind, and to see if they were being pursued.

FL Speaks - After a gap of 2 months, i am back to this masterpiece of George R.R Martin. I needed that break to clear my head and start the story afresh. Its a staggering tale, with characters so many and vivid that it would do well to sit down with the book with a clear mind.

The war rages on in the Seven Kingdoms. Loyalties are brought and discarded by the weight of coins. Catelyn Stark releases the main villain so that her daughters are returned safe. The Kingslayer, Jaime Lannister is free but the journey to Kings Landing is treacherous. Beyond the Wall in the North, Jon lives with Mance Rider, the ruler of the Free Folk and acts as a spy for the Nights Watch.

Tyrion by far is the best character yet again in this book. The absolute hilarious time was when he was forced to marry Sansa Stark. The sad thing is now when i get to read about him, Sansa inadvertently will tag along. That was a cunning move by the Lannisters as they plan to secure Winterfell through that marriage if Robb dies without a heir. Arya's story was dissapointing of all. I mean come on! Its almost predictable now. She's on the run, gets caught. Escapes and gets caught again. Though this time, her captors are much better.

Bran is on his way to the land beyond the wall to learn the mysteries of his dream state. Meanwhile Stannis Baratheon's army is broken and the red priestess warns them of a far greater danger approaching. As Stannis focuses on his war against Joffrey and the Lannisters, Daenerys is on the way to Westeros with her army and her three dragons. Jaime Lannister is captured on his way to freedom and his sword hand is cut. I absolutely loved that. Call me heartless, but that monster deserves more than a crippled hand. Thankfully, we have very less of that idiot Joffrey in the book.

Not that great book compared to the first two, but the last 100 pages or so are one of the very best. The Others or the Undead make their way to the wall and a surprise by Jon towards the end makes me itch to read the second part of Book Three.

And the cowbells peeled in his antlers, singing fool, fool, fool while the red woman looked down on him in pity, the candle flames dancing in her red red eyes.


FL Speaks - Okay, here we go. Westeros is at war. The realm now has 5 kings. Yes people, five. Apparently 'Game of Thrones' has lived up to its title. 5 players proclaim themselves king and King's Landing is the price. A Clash of Kings continues from where Book 1 (Game of Thrones) left and it starts with the coming of a comet blazing high in the sky. Though at first instant, the coming of dragons comes to mind, it still isn't clear what the coming of the comet heralds.

Stannis Baratheon, oldest brother of dead king Robert is the rightful heir and has proclaimed himself king, but so has his younger brother, Renly. In the East, King Robb, as he is called now as the 'King of the North' rushes to meet the Lannisters into battle to avenge the murder of Lord Stark and rescue his sisters. The imp, Tyrion is sent to King's Landing by his father to be the King's Hand, much to the chagrin of Queen Cersei. I was kind of hoping for this because i believe only he can kick the silly grin out of that child, King Joffrey. Tyrion is the best character yet again. Though closely followed by Arya, who i believe is slowly becoming a central part of the plot.

Dany, Dany, Dany! Dany on the other hand is the spider around whom the entire web is made, yet her story has the least number of pages though yet pivotal ones. People are finally flocking in to see the 'mother of the dragons' as she is now called by some. And she uses this fame and fear of her dragons as an advantage to to build an army. Clearly, she is going to last the whole saga. Robb Stark is winning whatever wars are thrown against him but grows wary as the two Baratheon brothers joins the battlefield. Stannis, who was nowhere in the first book has captured my interest. Though he seems to be a man in control, he can be easily swayed. The brothers, instead of facing the Lannisters together, decide to face off against each other and bump! As expected.

Meanwhile the ward of the dead lord stark, Theon has plans of his own and captures Winterfell. After living in the castle since he was 10, he decides to rule from there. Bran and Rickon escape in the dead of the night. Theon is an idiot. He sure looks like one in the tv series and in the book his idiocy is magnified. Sansa is being sansa, highly irritating and sucking up to Joffrey. Though she has dreams of escaping now. Finally!!! Arya is on the run with Robert's bastard. She tries to act like a boy but her secret is finally out that she's a girl. Jon on the other hand has gone ranging with the Lord Commander. This was the biggest ranging ever. The men of the Night's Watch are getting ready to face the army of the north. Because if the evil gets past the wall, no king in the realm would be able to stop it.

One good thing here is that Martin has managed to avoid the heroic fantasy or coming-of-age fantasy that is so predominant in most fantasy books. Instead his subgenre is High Fantasy. I almost expected the Starks to be the heroes but that looks less and less plausible with the rate they are ending up dead.

Phew!! Another massive book and another massive review. For me, atleast. Unlike the first book, i tried not to reveal as much as i could. With so many characters, its hard to just let go with making atleast some sense. A Clash of Kings is not as good as the first part, but this is a must-buy. Its a great novel, mind you, just didn't bring the same magic and madness alive as i expected. Thinking of taking a break before resuming the 3rd book, yet i have nothing else to read at the moment. Those who managed to read till here, i thank you with my heart for bearing with me. And if you have not started this series, i suggest you do so without a second wasted.

EXCERPT - For a moment, Eddard Stark was filled with a terrible sense of foreboding. This was his place, here in the north. He looked at the stone figures all around them, breathed deep in the chill silence of the crypt. He could feel the eyes of the dead. They were all listening, he knew. And winter was coming.

FL Speaks - It begins with an execution. A deserter of the Wall is captured by the guards of Winterfell and brought to the Lord of Winterfell, Lord Stark. As is the punishment for every deserter, Lord Stark beheads him. The starting was enough to keep me glued, though with a few mediocre chapters in between. This book revolves around the Starks of Winterfell. And among the huge family, the stories of Jon (the bastard son of Stark) and Arya (the youngest daughter) are the most fun to read. As they return to the castle, they find a litter of direwolves on their way. Since direvolves are the symbol of House Stark, he lets his sons and daughters keep them as pets.

The King's right hand man is dead. So King Robert travels down to with his whole family to Winterfell to offer Lord Stark the title. Stark and Roberts were friends and it was Stark who helped Robert get the crown after they defeated the last king. Now Roberts wants him at his side to rule the seven kingdoms. Meanwhile, Lady Stark recieves a message from her sister which implied the Lannisters (the queen's family) is behind the death of her husband, Arryn, the last Hand of the King.

One good thing about this book is that it has no singular main character. Though the Starks are prominent here, other character stories are important as you will realise the plot goes much beyond the first book. After the suspicious accident of one of Stark's younger son, which left him comatose, Stark agrees to go with the king to find the truth about the death of his friend, Arryn. Fast forward to a few chapters and we find, Stark's eldest daughter bethroed to Robert's youngest son. Stark soon finds out the Robert's child Joffrey is actually the son of the queen Cersei and her brother, Jaime Lannister (yeah, incest!!). At King's Landing, Eddard assumes the duties of the Hand, as Robert has become dissolute and uninterested in ruling. Angry that Catelyn has abducted Tyrion, (who Lady Stark suspected had a hand in the aaccident of her son) Jaime and his men confront Eddard and the Stark men on the streets of Kings Landing, leaving Eddard injured but killing his Stark men. Jaime flees Kings Landing and Eddard's authority as Hand of the King. As a gesture of mercy for Cersei's children, Eddard meets privately with Cersei and warns her to flee before he tells Robert, but Robert is killed on a hunt before Eddard can tell him. King Robert is killed by a boar when he went on a hunting trip and before he could prove it was the Queen's doing, Stark is betrayed and named a traitor.

The book gets exciting after this. Joffrey is named king and he orders Stark to be beheaded. That came as a shock to me. I kind of hoped Stark would escape with or without his children and stage a fightback. Maybe that's why i am not a writer. As news of Stark's execution travelled, Robb Stark, unites the banners of his allies and rides to war against the Lannisters. Soon, with a bold plan he manages to defeat one host of the Lannister's armies and captures Jamie. Robert's two elder brother's wages war against the Lannister's separately and none of them is pleased with the other's claim to the throne and they both proclaim themselves the rightful king. Meanwhile Robb Stark's allies decides to swear fealty to Robb and proclaims him the King of the North.

Far away in the north, a terror is spreading. Jon leaves Winterfell to join the Night's Watch. After hearing the news of his father's death, he flees to aid his half-brother but is called back by his friends of the Watch. A dark powerful enemy is moving from the north and of the Night's Watch falls, the whole realm will forever be lost regardless of who's the ruler.

Far beyond the sea, Viserys and his sister, Daenerys, are on the run. Viserys is the son of the dead king of the Dragons. Viserys arranges to sell his sister in marriage to Khal Drogo, warlord of nomadic Dothraki horse warriors, planning to use Drogo's army to reclaim the Iron Throne of Westeros for House Targaryen. Among the wedding gifts are three petrified dragon eggs. A knight exiled from Westeros, Ser Jorah Mormont, joins Viserys as an advisor. Unexpectedly, Daenerys finds trust and love with her barbaric husband, and they conceive a child who is prophesied to unite and rule the Dothraki. Drogo shows little interest in conquering Westeros, which provokes the temperamental Viserys to lash out at his sister. Initially, Drogo endures Viserys and punishes his outbursts with public humiliation. But when Viserys publicly threatens Daenerys, Drogo executes him by pouring a pot of molten gold over his head.

I loved the scene because honestly speaking, Viserys was a pain in the ass. And it was somewhat satisfying to see him screaming in the end. Later, Drogo is wounded and lies in a vegetative state and Daeneryes takes pity on him and smothers him. The Dothraki abandons them after their leader fell. Dany burns Drogo's body in a pyre and places the three dragon eggs over them. And as she walks into the burning flame, instead of being burnt to ashes, she returns with three dragon hatchlings. The remaining Dothraki swear their allegiance to the mother of the world's only living dragons as they prepare to gather an army to take back the seven kingdoms.

Phew!! Looking forward for the next part eagerly. It would be fun to see how destiny changes the lives of Jon and Robb and Arya as the battle horn sounds deep into the night.
