#BookReview: The Backyard Tales by Aniesha Brahma

The Backyard Tales is the story of the bond shared between 17-year-old Mia Basu Roy and her beloved cat, Pippo. She seems to understand him far too well for a human. And he seems to have another life that Mia begins to suspect. She follows her cat to their backyard and down a very dangerous road which leads her to witches, talking animals, and a story that’s much bigger than what she initially suspected.

Read this story to discover all of Mia and Pippo’s secrets, be enchanted by magic, and get the answer to a question that has haunted us for ages: does a cat truly love their owner?

My Rating: 3.75/5

Review: Once in a while it feels good to be lost in a story of animals that can talk and of passionate teenagers who have the courage and sense to make a difference to the world. When Aniesha told me about this book, I knew it would be special for her because she loves her cats and that love clearly shone in the pages of this book. I am not a pet-lover kind of person but I like cat videos and it was adorable to finally read a book that revolved around cats majorly.

This is a sweet fantasy fiction story that starts in a faraway fantastical kingdom, a failed rebellion, and friends & family separated. We then come to the present times and meet Mia, her new pet cat Pippo, her friends in school and strays & people from the neighborhood. There seems to be some trouble brewing in her area for the animals and to fix it, the assigned witch has come to Earth and devised a plan to send all the stray animals to her kingdom ( with or without consent, isn't too clear ). Then there is Shekhar, Mia's old friend on whom she seems to have a tiny crush too perhaps, who is always willing to help Mia in spite of her odd and often rude behave.

The parts of the story with the animals, the meetings & planning, and Mia helping all of them escape hard times is written well. I loved reading those sections - Mia's love for Pippo and her determination to fight for the ones who could not fight for themselves so well made for a good read. What I did not like was her behave with other people. She sounded very immature and stubborn at a lot of places which was kind of inconsistent with her character at times. I liked the plot and how all loose ends were tied in the story but character-wise, I do hope to see Mia do better in the next part of the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed spending the weekend with this book.

Into the Night, and other stories Into the Night, and other stories by Aniesha Brahma
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Happy stories for a warming your heart

Aniesha is my go to author for smiles and sweet happy story. I have read all but one books by her and reviewed most on this blog.  Mostly her stories and the people are so real.. you can find loving them or finding your own thought echoed in their feelings. This is a very short read - a collection of six stories - each different in setting and cast but each leaving you with a smile.

The title Story "Into the night" is about six princesses and their one last (mis)adventure. It teaches one about courage to fix your mistakes and finding own happiness. Ariana's tale is set in the same world and is about love and decisions we take for love.

A bunch of roses was a sweet tale of nostalgia and friendship. Happenstance was quite crafty in being open ended and yet making you feel a little sorry for the lady in the story. Magic was the purely fantasy fictional tale and is an important lesson for many.

At last , the Missed bus is my favorite story of the book. It might feel a little predictable but the romantic in me could picture each scene as it happened and I just had such a huge grin on my face when I finished the story and the book too since this is the last story.

Overall I enjoyed this quick read a lot. It was a happy break from reality and as always with Aniesha's books, it made me believe in happiness , love and magic in the world once again.

All Signs Lead Back to You by Aniesha Brahma

Every time Aniesha writes a book / story , I feel so happy knowing that it will heal my soul whenever I decide to read it. Of course , getting a review copy is one of the pleasures that keeps this blog alive. I have read all of her books and one thing that shines about her writing is the way she makes everyday stories special. Not just for the characters, but also for the readers.

It takes so much brilliance to show that there is a love story at every where we look with love and care for the feelings. And if you think teenage romance is so different from the way we love at later age , you do not know love at all. Be at any age , people make stupid mistakes and some brave choices every time there is heart involved. This is a tale of friends and lovers and how we switch between two , 'cause friends can be soulmates too !

Afraid of the future and being hurt , Diya Rai breaks up with Ashwin , hurting him not for the loss of love but more for the friendship that they shared. For both Diya and Ashwin , they were the most suitable person in the whole world - opposites and yet inseparable for the whole time they were together in school. Diya, the sensitive girl with a hurtful past found strength in Ashwin and later in Nina , her new best friend in college. Nina later becomes her strength and guide when Ashwin and Diya meet again , but refuse to have anything to do with each other's life.

I liked Nina and felt Diya was little too stupid for my taste. Ashwin is adorable and charming most times but it is the other two characters that deserved more than being caricatures in this drama.

Overall , A lovely sweet read. Do give it a chance to heal you when you feel low some day.

When Our Worlds Collide by Aniesha Brahma

I have always admired Aniesha's books. For some unexplained reason, they remind me of my younger dreamy self. And then there is the poems she weaves into the stories. Like icing on a fresh yummy cake :D

One night last week,I started reading this book just to get it started so I would finish it next day. 2 hours later, i had finished the book and had such a huge smile on my face.

This is a story of Akriti ,Zyan and some more people who are a part of their world. Akriti and Zyan are as different in approach to life as much they are similar in interests and understanding of life. But this book is not about the plot but more about how Aniesha has treated it with her words and understanding of characters. There is this whole range of love and friendship saga that we all go through and sometimes we do realize its neither the end or the beginning of either. It is a ride life offers us at times and one should just enjoy it.

Aniesha is one of the few authors who really write YA in true sense. The way the changing emotions and trends are captured in this novella is brilliant. The book size is perfect , flow of the story too. This is a book for readers of all ages and taste.

The Guitar Girl by Aniesha Brahma

Its an age of meeting less chatting more, be it whatsapp , gtalk , facebook or the occasional email. The Guitar girl is mostly written as chats , sms , journals and emails. It is anusing to note that indeed all these modes cover the life story of so many people around us.

Guitar girl is the blog name taken up by Rhea to anonymously write songs about her love for Joy who happens to be her brother's best friend. He is the reason that she picks up the guitar again and makes a sincere effort to learn in order to have some connect with Joy who is a musician himself. Then there is Sophie and Arjav , Rhea's best friends , Arjav's elder brother who is the girl's tution teacher too and some other characters who add a little spice to the plot.
The style of writing is casual and fun and almost like any chat conversation would sound. Though given Rhea and Joy's age , the story might need an initial convincing to do for the reader , it takes off quite well after that. I see so many couples around me who think their love life is most troubled and its the end of world and yet there is so much learning this phase brings to them. Though I am much older to experience that I do laugh at such memories from my life. This book made me laug and smile at many places and was a good happy read for the day. Every character has its own shades of grey but it is endearing too. It is good to see how everyone is related to each other's stories. The book almost touches on all scenes and issues that modern teenage faces these days and does a good job.
The writing pattern might put off a few readers and ones who do not enjoy teenage in love sort of stories should give it a try with an open mind.

The Secret Proposal by Aniesha Brahma

Reviewed by Nimue and Swarnali

From the book cover :

Twenty-one year old Larissa Chakroborty (better known as Jasmine) has been forced into the company of her parents' friends' son, twenty-five year old Tanveer Bhattacharya (aka Veer) ever since she was thirteen and he was seventeen.
Jasmine found herself slowly getting drawn towards this teenage boy and harbours an unrequited crush on him, long after he disappears from her life in order to pursue a college degree.
Eight years later Veer returns. and makes her a rather strange proposal. He wants her to pretend that they're in love and would eventually settle down in life, for he wishes to avoid tying the knot with a girl of his parents' choice.
The constant ego battle between the two, the love-hate relationship, break ups and realisations is what The Secret Proposal is all about, wherein love would eventually find a way.
Is it enough to get your long time love to be in a 'pretense relationship' with you?
Does one grand gesture convince you that you've found your knight in shining armour? And why is it that when you have someone, you don't want them… and when you lose them, you want them back?

Nimue Says :

First thing , I totally liked the personalized note that Aniesha added to the book before sending it to me. Thanks ! I loved the gesture.

What all we have not done or would not do to spend time with our crush ? To be in his good books always and to hope that one day he / she would realize the intentions ? But is it so easy to look past a person's defenses and intentions ? Do we not usually think just our side of the story unless some one else points out what we always missed to register and acknowledge !

Can you ever not fall in love with some one who lets ypu be who you are and still likes you ? Well , love is a hard feeling to accept , express and more so , convince the other person.

Jasmine is your usual girl who has forever been in love with Veer and yet he can't like all of him. He is sure arrogant and has a terrible sense of humor as per Jasmine but only she knows he is also caring , respectful and oh so charming forever. Both Jasmine and Veer love coming together even if as an arrangement or "the secret proposal" but both fail to hold on to the connect. And from there is one mis-event after another till the sweet reunion in the end.

The book is a fairly engaging read and entertains not just with the love story but the festival life of Kolkatta comes so vividly alive. I loved reading about all the pujo days and the wedding ceremonies and the way Kolkatta celebrates. A plus it is to the book and shows the beautiful observation skills of the author.

The writing is easy but not casual. The storyline connects the reader to Veer's and Jasmine's thoughts and intentions though Veer is such a confused character. I absolutely loved Meghan , the best friend character. What would we do without friends like her ?

The flaws / the minor negatives if I must point out here would be Jasmine fainting so much !! Was it 3 times or 4 ?? And totally not cool when there were 2 guys fighting for her !! Plus she is kinda too stubborn in her ways at times when she is avoiding Veer. Ok, not so much uncalled but I so wanted to hold her and give her some sense. A few scenes look dragged but they are tied well thankfully.

The book is fun.
Do try it any day for some smiles.

And oh , don't forget to check the poetry in the Preface ! Its absolutely wonderful.

Swarnali Speaks :
First of all, I would really thank Aniesha for the personal note she added on the first page. Gestures like these make the reading experience better :)

Coming to the book, the cover is really pretty and the picture prepares us for the fairy tale romance world that we are about to enter as we read the book. As you can read from the back cover of the book, this is the story of Larrisa a.k.a. Jasmine and her childhood crush Tanveer a.k.a Veer.

For starters, almost everyone would identify with the protagonist of the book, Larrisa for we've all had our shares of crushes, those innocent stares, the light-headed feeling when your crush looks back at you and smiles, the unending daydreams and what not. I don’t have a particular love for romances, but this book was a pleasant change from the same old stereotyped campus romance tales that I’m tired of reading. Another thing that I particularly liked was the absence of grammatical errors. I didn't notice any in the book (I don’t remember having come across typographical errors either but I’m not very sure about that). The language is simple and lucid and the story flows smoothly. I loved the narration where the author describes the festivity and mirth that envelops the City of Joy, Kolkata and its inhabitants during Durga Pujo. The celebrations and ceremonies are immaculately described.

Of all the characters mentioned in the book, I loved Larrisa’s best buddy Meghan a.k.a MM the most. She is the perfect best friend who is always there to help Jasmine and fixes all the mess ups she does. Everyone needs a bestie like her :D Veer is the very handsome knight in shining armour that our heroine has been crushing after since she was a teenager. He is omnipresent and arrives at the right moments to save our damsel in distress.

A few things I didn't like much in the book were the repeated use of phrases like “bridal style”, and “chocolate brown eyes”. The novel seemed to be filled with parties of all kinds happening over and over throughout the course of the book. Larissa seems to be too weak, fainting multiple times.

Apart from these minor glitches, the book is a really pleasant read, perfect for those days when you want to just sit down and relax with a light breezy book. A really good debut novel. If you are a chick-lit fan, you'll really like this one. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series (with Meghan as the protagonist) that Aniesha is planning to write next.

Swarnali's Rating : 3 / 5
